Sushi Restaurant Los Angeles

The recipient of Travel & Leisure’s 2008 award for Best-Design restaurant, Katsuya’s second outpost, at the corner of Hollywood and Vine, features the dynamic pairing of master sushi chef Katsuya Uechi and world-renowned designer Philippe Starck. A slight departure from its flagship Brentwood location, the décor at this locale is a bit more provocative- a reflection of its Hollywood environs. Katsuya Hollywood’s main dining room is anchored by a large Sushi Beat flanked by individual seats as well as two and four-person tables that can be served directly from the sushi chefs. Double-height ceilings create an airy, open space with four large black Noren curtains featuring the kanji symbol for Katsuya hanging from the ceiling above. Patrons can chose from multiple seating areas, either in the main dining room by the Susi Bar, or the more exclusive Dragon Lounge.

Unique decor and ambiance made this a memorable dining experience. High-end Japanese isn’t about quantity, it’s about quality and our dinner met the expectation. Spicy tuna on crispy rice was as good as you’d think. Miso butterfish was good, not great, but that isn’t a knock. I’d still go back to order it again if I lived locally. I was in between 4 or 5 stars but really couldn’t justify removing a star. This was a one-time visit so take my advice with that grain of salt. Can’t vouch for consistency, wait time, or service on a crowded night.

Grabbed a quick bite here for dinner during the happy hour. They’ve got decent specials during happy hour but the freshness of the sushi makes this place worth the visit. Their Otoro and Salmon was phenomenal but the Uni was just okay. Can be a little pricey for the average sushi goer, but worth it.

How does this place not have all 5-star reviews? It’s obsession-worthy. If it was a person, I would be its stalker. I don’t live in LA. I had the crispy rice spicy tuna rolls once time like 10 years ago and fell in love.

Went back recently and it didn’t disappoint. CRISPY RICE SPICEY TUNA, I love you so much. Also loved the baked crab hand rolls, the scallops, Hamachi, rock shrimp. Everything is delicious.

Yes, it’s pricey, but worth the splurge! Not crowded for lunch.
